In my interaction with my students, I have become a firm believer that it is often the seemingly inconsequential things that make the most impact. The feeling you get when you walk into a classroom is one of those small things. I do my best to give my students as much of a choice as possible because it is in those choices that personal growth, understanding, and responsibility are built. When I first started teaching I bought a set of stools with the intention of building circles for Socratic Seminars that would spark creative revolutions. Over time, that dream turned into a stack of dusty stools; however, when I gave my students the permission to "pull up a stool" I had meaningful conversations popping up on a regular basis. My goal is to create a space where students are given the opportunity to make choices regarding how they learn best, even if that means sitting on the floor. (Or on a stool.)
