I've had former students come to pick up their younger siblings that still attend here and pop their phone case out and show me the polaroid from their last day here in 5th grade. That makes me know I need to keep trying to do it. It is only possible because of you; polaroid film is expensive and with about 100 kids in the 5th grade each year, I could not pull it off on my own wallet. Thank you so much for funding this; I really love doing it. Every wiped-down desk, every pump of hand sanitizer, every tissue grabbed before a sneeze could spread — those small moments added up to something big: a classroom full of kids who actually showed up.\r\nThis year, our first graders stayed healthier and more present than I could have hoped. Fewer sick days meant more time together — more read-alouds, more math discoveries, more of the little breakthroughs that make teaching first grade so magical.\r\nWe even had a wonderful science unit on birds, where students were drawing, coloring, cutting, and creating at their tables every day. Having clean, sanitized surfaces meant they could dive into those hands-on projects without worry — and they did, with so much joy and curiosity.\r\nThese supplies kept our classroom a safe, healthy space right up until my maternity leave began. These supplies — markers, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, and dry erase markers — are the building blocks of that experience.\r\nThis year, our class embarked on an exciting science and literacy unit all about birds. Students didn't just read about birds — they became junior ornithologists, studying beaks, feathers, and habitats, and then brought what they learned to life through art. They practiced drawing robins, owls, eagles, and more, using markers and crayons to capture every detail with pride. Watching a six-year-old carefully color in a bird's wing and say \"that's the one I researched\" is exactly the kind of moment these supplies make possible.\r\nBeyond our bird unit, these materials fuel daily writing workshops, creative storytelling, and the kind of messy, joyful, hands-on learning that sticks with young children long after the school year ends.\r\nWhen students have the tools they need, they show up ready to try, ready to create, and ready to grow. They loved the \"pop\" of green on our shelves and desks. One student remarked that the room felt \"fancy and calm,\" which is exactly the atmosphere I hoped to create. Even though they are faux plants, the touch of nature has made our classroom feel much more like a home.\r\n\r\nProject Spotlight: Mastering the Minutes\r\nThe absolute star of our week has been the Telling Time Teaching Clocks. We've integrated them into a \"Race Against the Clock\" daily challenge.\r\n\r\nThe Moment: Instead of squinting at a tiny digital display, students are now looking up at the colorful, easy-to-read analog faces.\r\n\r\nThe Breakthrough: During a small-group lesson, a student who has always struggled with \"quarter-past\" finally had a \"lightbulb moment\" because the clock's design makes the intervals so clear. The silent sweep second hand is also a blessing—it provides a visual cue for time passing without the distracting \"tick-tick-tick\" during quiet study.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next for Us?\r\nWe are now moving into our \"Time and Organization\" unit, and your contributions are at the center of our daily routine:\r\n\r\nVisual Schedules: We are using the YYST Magnetic Anchor Chart Holders to display our daily \"Roadmap.\" Being able to easily swap out date cards and anchor charts on the whiteboard has helped my students become much more independent in managing their own transitions.\r\n\r\nSmall Group Rotation: The magnetic holders are also being used to hang our \"Goal of the Day\" charts, allowing students to see exactly what they are working toward as they move between stations.\r\n\r\nTime Management Skills: Students are now beginning to set their own \"work timers\" using the analog clocks to help them visualize how much time they have left for specific tasks.\r\n\r\nThank you for providing the tools that make these moments possible. By moving beyond simple facts, Bea's Bees and Fossils Tell of Long Ago help our students develop critical observation skills and a sense of environmental agency. In Bea's Bees, students follow a narrative that teaches them how to identify different bee species and understand the \"cause and effect\" of habitat loss, which empowers them to think about real-world conservation. Fossils Tell of Long Ago introduces the concept of \"Deep Time,\" helping children visualize Earth's history through clear diagrams of mold and cast fossils. In our classroom, reading looks like a bustling laboratory: you might see students using \"bee finger puppets\" to simulate pollination with Cheetos dust, or pressing shells into clay to recreate the fossilization process described in Aliki's book. These texts turn quiet reading into a springboard for hands-on inquiry, where the book provides the \"why\" and the students discover the \"how.\"\r\n\r\nWe've seen a particular spark in our aspiring environmentalists and visual learners. For example, students who were once nervous about insects are now \"Bee Scouts,\" inspired by Beatrix's bravery to advocate for pollinator gardens in our own schoolyard. Fossils Tell of Long Ago has been a huge hit with our kinesthetic learners; the book's conversational tone and diverse characters—including scientists of all backgrounds—make the field of paleontology feel accessible and exciting to every child. One of our quieter students recently led a \"museum tour\" of our classroom's clay fossils, using the technical vocabulary she learned directly from the text. By providing these high-quality resources, you aren't just giving them books; you're giving them the tools to see themselves as the scientists and protectors of tomorrow.","fullyFundedDate":1773843512447,"projectUrl":"project/chapters-of-change/10150888/","projectTitle":"Chapters of Change","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Brooks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3025260_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1565462906210","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3025260"},{"teacherId":4183956,"projectId":9962842,"letterContent":"The table lamps in this project are the icing on the cake for my classroom. Aromatherapy claims certain scents can calm or create other pleasant sensory experiences for your nervous system via your scent of smell. I believe it!
