These texts are deepening my students understanding of social justice issues, empathy, resilience, identity, and belonging—topics that are especially important for our students.\r\n\r\nMany of my students who have immigrated to the U.S., have become particularly attached to The Garcia Girls, The Circuit and Esperanza Rising. They have shared that these stories remind them of their own journey, of crossing borders to start new lives in the U.S., leaving family behind and facing the challenges of cultural adjustment. Many students have shared their interest in writing their own story one day. Others have been inspired by All American Boys and many others, as they explore critical thinking, empathy, and activism.\r\n\r\nAnother book that has especially resonated with them is Becoming by Michelle Obama. For many students, her story of resilience and growth is both inspiring and relatable. It has sparked important conversations about identity, belonging, and the power of perseverance. \r\n\r\nAs interest continues to grow, I'm excited to share that I'm in the process of obtaining a bookshelf to make them more accessible. I've also decided to start a book club where students will have the opportunity to choose the book they want to read together. \r\n\r\nYour support has truly made a difference, and I am so excited to see how our reading nook continues to grow and evolve into a space where all students feel valued.","fullyFundedDate":1749237744592,"projectUrl":"project/an-inviting-reading-nook-celebrating-di/9371935/","projectTitle":"An Inviting Reading Nook: Celebrating Diversity and Pride through Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8659024_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749427792914","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/counselor-morales"},{"teacherId":8659024,"projectId":9297322,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our crochet project. Your generosity created a joyful surprise for both students and staff. I originally expected only a handful of students to sign up—but to my amazement, more than fifty students eagerly joined. Their enthusiasm has been incredible.\r\nOne of my favorite moments so far was seeing a very quiet, timid student confidently teaching another how to start their first chain. Crocheting has given students a space to feel accepted, creative, and connected—and they're truly flourishing.\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their faces lit up. Many couldn't believe the kits were for them. Several students immediately shared that their parents crochet or knit at home, and others were excited to bring this newfound hobby back to their families.\r\nBecause of the overwhelming interest, I've decided to begin multiple cycles of crochet groups—one now, another starting in January, and a third in March—so even more students can enjoy this meaningful pastime.\r\nI'm also planning to expand the project by starting a family crochet group, where parents and children can learn and create together. Many students told me their parents love crocheting, and I believe this will strengthen family bonds and continue the spirit of creativity and community.\r\nAdditionally, I'm inviting staff members who know how to crochet to share their talents with our students. This will create even more mentorship, connection, and joy in our school community.\r\nYour support has helped turn our school into a place where students don't just learn—they give.","fullyFundedDate":1746193008539,"projectUrl":"project/creating-comfort-crochet-kits-for-kids/9297322/","projectTitle":"Creating Comfort: Crochet Kits for Kids Helping Kids","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8659024_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749427792914","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/counselor-morales"},{"teacherId":2591948,"projectId":9687369,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom project. Your funding provided us with essential supplies, including subscriptions to TIME for Kids Magazine, which has made a powerful and immediate impact on our learning.\r\nThe magazines have already sparked incredible classroom discussions and real-world connections. The articles are written at a highly accessible level (around 4th grade), yet they still introduce ample academic vocabulary and strong visual support, making them perfect for boosting the comprehension and confidence of our English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students.\r\nOur recent issue on food waste led to one of our most engaging lessons yet. We learned an astonishing fact—that our country wastes over 80 billion pounds of food annually—and we then discussed modern solutions like the Too Good to Go App, which connects consumers with discounted food at the end of the day.\r\nThe best part was hearing how our students applied this lesson at home! I learned that many families already combat food waste by saving leftovers for lunch the next day and creatively turning ingredients into casseroles. These discussions are building both literacy skills and civic awareness.\r\nBeyond the magazines, the high-quality supplies you provided keep our room stocked, and the students are taking excellent care of them. The titles you helped provide—stories about LGBTQ+ youth, young activists, characters with disabilities, and narratives centered on justice, inclusion, and empathy—are already sparking meaningful moments. \r\n\r\nYour support has also helped me foster a love for reading that I've only recently come to appreciate myself. I didn't read much growing up, and it wasn't until later in life that I discovered how powerful a book can be—to teach, to heal, to inspire. Now, I want every one of my students to experience that same power. And to make sure they have access beyond my office, I've also started preparing take-home bags with books and essentials.\r\n\r\nIncredibly, this project has also led to a new partnership with the local public library just down the street. We'll be taking walking field trips with students to explore everything the library has to offer.\r\n\r\nThis is only the beginning. With your help, we've built more than a collection—we've created opportunities for growth, confidence, and connection. And I'm so excited to keep growing this work, one book and one student at a time.","fullyFundedDate":1750860446272,"projectUrl":"project/books-that-inspire-a-library-of-hope/9402972/","projectTitle":"Books That Inspire: A Library of Hope, Justice, and Belonging","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8659024_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749427792914","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/counselor-morales"},{"teacherId":8659024,"projectId":9333989,"letterContent":"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my project to provide hygiene essentials for our middle school students. Because of your generosity, we've created something truly meaningful—a safe, welcoming space where students can care for themselves with dignity and confidence.\r\n\r\nIn fact, the project has grown in beautiful and unexpected ways. I've now created a bin filled with lightly scented lotion and body spray that students can use for a quick refresh during the day. It may seem small, but those few seconds of self-care can give a student the confidence boost they need to feel their best and keep going.\r\n\r\nI've also started preparing take-home hygiene bags—filled with essentials like deodorant, toothbrushes, soap, and more—so students can have what they need not only at school but also at home. These bags are made possible entirely because of your generosity.\r\n\r\nBut the impact didn't stop there. After seeing how powerful this project was, I launched a new effort to collect clean uniforms, underwear, and socks for students who come to school unkept. We've even obtained a portable washing machine so we can discreetly wash students' clothes when needed. I also partnered with a church around the corner from our school that provides clothing to the community. When I asked if they could help supply extra uniforms and undergarments for our students, they agreed without hesitation.\r\n\r\nYour support helped me respond to an urgent need, but it also sparked a larger mission—one rooted in care, dignity, and community. You didn't just donate hygiene items. You helped give our students peace of mind, pride in themselves, and the ability to show up ready to learn and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1747861768769,"projectUrl":"project/helping-students-shine-with-hygiene-supp/9333989/","projectTitle":"Helping Students Shine With Hygiene Support","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8659024_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749427792914","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/counselor-morales"},{"teacherId":8659024,"projectId":9018922,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, the snacks I now keep stocked in my school counseling office have become more than just food—they've become a bridge to trust, comfort, and support. My students were surprised, grateful, and visibly relieved. t's amazing what a granola bar, fruit cup, or crackers can do to restore energy and bring a smile to a student's face.\r\n\r\nThis project opened my eyes to just how deep the need for food support is in our school community. While the snacks have been critical, I knew we had to think beyond just the school day. That's why I recently partnered with a local church just around the corner from our school that houses a wellness center providing food to families in need every Monday and Wednesday.\r\n\r\nI'm incredibly proud to share that the center agreed to allow, students themselves, to pick up food, as long as I call ahead to let them know that they're coming. This is a huge step in preserving student dignity and independence. In addition, I will be picking up food myself on days when the center is closed to the public, so we can provide emergency support as needed. \r\n\r\nYour donation was the spark that started all of this.
