Students use rulers to measure and create accurate diagrams, calculators to check and extend their mathematical thinking, and graphing sticky notes to organize tables, plot points, and make connections between equations and graphs. Headphones allow students to focus during independent digital practice and instructional videos, while index cards and erasers make it easier to practice, revise, and try again. One especially meaningful moment is watching a student who is unsure of an answer use the tools available to them, make a correction, and keep working instead of giving up.\r\n\r\nMy students were excited to see that they had their own set of tools to use in math class. The calculators and headphones were especially popular, but students quickly found uses for everything—from graphing sticky notes to index cards for showing their work. They appreciated having the supplies they needed readily available instead of having to worry about not having a ruler, eraser, or other basic math tool. It helped reinforce the message that they are mathematicians and that having the right tools can help them be successful.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue applying these tools as students work through grade-level math concepts and increasingly complex problem-solving tasks. Students will use graphing sticky notes to represent relationships visually, rulers to create precise mathematical models, calculators to support computation and check their reasoning, and index cards to explain and share their thinking. We are also continuing to build a classroom culture where making mistakes, revising work, and trying a different strategy are important parts of learning. Students are able to choose from options such as popcorn, granola bars, pretzels, protein bars, jerky, and other snacks when they are hungry. I have seen students who were distracted by hunger become more focused and engaged once they had something to eat. During math lessons, students are better able to participate in discussions, work through challenging problems, and persevere when they have the energy they need to learn.\r\n\r\nMy students were incredibly excited and grateful when they saw the variety of snacks! Many immediately started talking about their favorite options and were excited that there was something for everyone. More importantly, students appreciated knowing that their classroom had a place where they could get a snack when they needed one. It created a sense of comfort and community and showed students that others cared about their well-being, not just their academic success.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building our math skills through problem-solving, collaboration, and productive struggle. We are working on applying new concepts, explaining our mathematical thinking, and learning from mistakes. Having access to classroom snacks helps remove one barrier to learning so students can focus their attention on the challenging work in front of them.
