This is a big step towards equity for students who struggle with reading even when it is not in the cursive script. A few of my former students, who stop by often, immediately noticed the new furniture. They were excited for this year's classes and kept saying how lucky the new students were to have it.\r\n\r\nWhen the school year began, my 10th- and 12th-graders were quick to try out the different seating options. Some chose softer chairs for reading, others picked more active seating to help them focus. Several students told me it made the room feel more comfortable and helped them settle in.\r\n\r\nWe now use the flexible seating every day—for independent reading, writing, group discussions, and quiet breaks. Reading a short novel in a different language during the first semester might have seemed like a very ambitious goal. But with the support you provided, my novice learners have been able to get in touch with historic events and cultural practices that made the language classroom a community of learners. This time the story of a not-so popular kid in contemporary Mexico, uncovered legends of hidden treasures from the times of the Mecican Revolution and family celebrations with traditions that are otherwise widely misunderstood.
