My students, especially those in Advisory who use the space as a study hall and those who stay after school for tutoring, know that they can count on a small but meaningful level of support. The most consistently used items are the simplest: Life Savers mints and water. These are easy to distribute and non-disruptive. A mint can help a student reset during independent reading or wake up during a long block period, while water offers a quick refresh that helps with focus. What has been most impactful is how quietly and respectfully these resources meet students' needs.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, there was immediate excitement, especially for favorites like Cheez-Its and granola bars. But over time, something more meaningful has taken shape. As those initial, more popular items were used up, students began reaching for options like applesauce, which has become a nourishing and practical choice for students who truly need it. I have noticed that these items are finding their way into the hands of the students who benefit most. This project has not only helped sustain attention during class but has also strengthened the sense of care and community in our room. Paired with the Folger Teaching Guide, which emphasizes performance, discussion, and inquiry, students discovered that Shakespeare's plays are not only understandable, but still fun, relevant, and engaging to perform today.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active, collaborative, and student-centered. We cast all the roles on the first day, and students read scenes aloud both as a whole class and in small groups. The folders helped students keep scripts organized and track character lines during performance-based activities. We paused frequently to annotate, jot reflections, or sketch quick notes on loose-leaf paper, intentionally working away from screens to promote focus and deeper thinking. Earbuds allowed students to watch short film adaptations or listen to professional audio performances, which helped bring the language to life. Hearing Shakespeare performed enabled students to grasp emotion, pacing, and meaning in ways that print alone often cannot.
