The color printer is also a huge hit! We've already used it to print final projects for gallery walks and to share student work.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting additions has been the video camera. As we continue to incorporate it into our routines, it will play an integral role in supporting student reflection and documenting end-of-unit presentations.\r\n\r\nEven the smaller items are making an impact. Because of your generosity, my 9th graders were able to read Gareth Hinds' full graphic novel adaptation of The Odyssey—and they loved it. This version made Homer's classic feel fresh, accessible, and visually engaging for all of my students, regardless of reading level. Having a full class set allowed us to build consistent routines and end the year with joyful reading, meaningful discussions, and creative expression.\r\n\r\nWe explored the text through literature circles, with each student taking on a role such as discussion leader, summarizer, researcher, illustrator, or word wizard. They collaborated in shared Google Docs, organizing their understanding of Odysseus's journey with summaries, personal and historical connections, vocabulary banks, timelines, and original artwork. I was amazed by the quiet focus during our daily reading time (just the sound of pages turning!) and the thoughtfulness and depth of our lit circle discussions. Some began to ask if there were any snacks before class started, and others lit up when I walked around offering them something after a presentation or assignment. The materials you provided—from the grow lights and power strip to the plant nutrients and air pumps—completely transformed an empty cabinet into a thriving aquaponics station, giving my students a hands-on experience with the natural world that most had never had before.\r\nBringing Nature to Life in the Classroom\r\nMy students literally gasped when they first saw the boxes of materials arrive. You could see the curiosity bubbling up, especially when they realized these were the tools to build their very own indoor farm. Their initial reaction was pure excitement, mixed with a little bit of disbelief that they would be responsible for growing plants. It was truly a sight to behold when students who spent their lives in an urban environment suddenly had the opportunity to connect with something so fundamentally natural.\r\nOne particularly memorable moment happened when we were setting up the systems. A group of students, usually quite reserved, were meticulously connecting the air pumps to the tubing, completely engrossed in the task. When the air started bubbling through the water, they erupted in cheers, excited by this tiny mechanism that would help the plants breathe. It was a simple moment, but it perfectly illustrated their engagement and the wonder this project inspired. Throughout the school years, they've not just been reading about plant biology; they've been actively monitoring pH levels, adjusting nutrient solutions, and eagerly checking for new growth daily for their various projects. They've discovered the delicate balance of an ecosystem right there in our classroom, learning about plant nutrition, water chemistry, and even mitigating environmental impact in a way that went far beyond any textbook.\r\n\r\nWith our hydro systems active, my students charted the growth of their chosen plants, meticulously recorded data on water quality, and troubleshot any issues that arose, like nutrient deficiencies or pH imbalances. This deepened their understanding of plant pathology and the intricate needs of living organisms. We also explored the economic and environmental benefits of urban farming, discussing how these small-scale systems could contribute to sustainable food sources in communities like ours. Your contribution truly allowed us to cultivate not just plants, but also a profound sense of wonder and responsibility in these spectacular young people. \r\n\r\nCurrently, the classroom is quiet for summer, and the materials are neatly packed away, awaiting their next big project. This project laid the groundwork for future explorations into sustainable practices and urban agriculture, and we can't wait to see what new discoveries our students make with these resources when school resumes.","fullyFundedDate":1494205038741,"projectUrl":"project/hooked-on-ponics/2551396/","projectTitle":"Hooked on 'Ponics","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kriete","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3081379_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657564824352","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/keelsclass"},{"teacherId":3062740,"projectId":9237097,"letterContent":"Thank you for your support.
