I'm Jennifer Nutting, a fifteen year veteran of LAUSD. I grew up on the east coast, in a place very different from where I teach. I became an English teacher because I loved to read, but didn't like school all that much. I thought maybe I could do it a little bit different. My students are recent immigrants, or children of recent immigrants attending high school in the inner city. Most speak another language besides English, and the entire school population of 1400 qualifies for free lunch. My district has an amorally high drop out rate. I truly believe making connections with my students, and showing them how education is applied in the real world is the spark that will light the fire in my students to finish high school, and continue on to college.
