My students are using the pencils, erasers, highlighters, paper, glue sticks, and other supplies every day as they read, write, revise, and create. The organizational supplies and classroom lighting are also helping me create a more welcoming and organized space where students can focus and feel comfortable learning.\r\n\r\nOne specific project where these materials have been especially helpful is our Sustainability Consultant Challenge. My sixth-grade students are working in teams to investigate the environmental and human impacts of LEGO products throughout their life cycle- from extracting materials to manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal. Students are using paper, pencils, and highlighters to examine evidence, record important information, and develop recommendations for how a company could become more sustainable. They will eventually use what they have learned to create and present a sustainability proposal.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were excited to see supplies that they could actually use in their everyday learning. Even something as simple as having plenty of new pencils, highlighters, and paper makes a difference because students can get started on their work without having to worry about whether they have the materials they need. We went on two excursions after this project was funded, including the Junior Achievement Finance Park and the Denver Powwow. It was called \"Strong Start\" because the first few weeks of school are critical for establishing a strong learning environment. I am happy to report back that our class had an incredible first few weeks of fourth grade. This set them up to have strong academic growth throughout the school year. Our students showed incredible growth on a variety of measures. At our school, success also means having relative learning experiences. This year, we went on six field trips, set up composting for our farm, hosted a climate change summit, and helped our kinder buddies plant an apple tree. The new bins have held up really well; I think they will last me a long time!\r\n\r\nAs a Title I school, we do not have much extra money to spend on things like this.
