We made colorful balloon columns at the entrance to the event. Many years ago, I purchased a set of handbells for a self-contained, special education classroom where I worked with a low vision student once a week. I laminated color coded music sheets and every week we practiced. Up until then, my student and I would usually find a quiet space to work together one on one. This was the first time I planned a lesson that incorporated his sighted classmates too. At the school's Christmas Assembly, the class played \"I Can't Help Falling in Love with You\" by Elvis Presley. It was such a beautiful moment, the students nailed it, and there wasn't a dry eye in the auditorium. Ever since that moment I have dreamed of expanding the handbells to every classroom where I have students with vision loss and additional disabilities. Your generosity has made that dream a reality.\r\n\r\nI made laminated copies of handbell music and created a slide show that flashes the color of each note on the smartboard to the beat of the music. We are still in the first month of school, so the students have just been introduced to the bells. The students are continuing to explore the bells and learning how to ring their bell just one time when the color of their bell appears on the screen. Once they get that part down, we will begin to practice playing music. We have decided that the first song we learn will be \"Happy Birthday\" since it will be the song we can perform most often throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students this incredible opportunity to learn to play the handbells. Many of our most memorable and meaningful learning experiences have been the direct result of Donor's Choose donors like you. \r\n\r\nFor my students with CVI, one of the primary characteristics, especially in the early phases, is the appeal or attention towards light. Utilizing the flashlight to illuminate and project the illustrations of their shadow books during reading blocks allows for accessibility and inclusivity. Additionally, during this reading activity my kiddos are provided opportunities to strengthen their visual skills. The students were so excited when I dimmed the lights, presented them with flashlights, and began reading. My students could understand the concepts and apply the knowledge to solve the problems much easier than the past years. They also show their works in steps much better than before.
