The puck lights have also been a big help in keeping our noise level down, when they glow red, my students know it's time to use no voices!\r\n\r\nMy kindergartners were so excited when they first saw everything. We've also started playing a fun game called \"Magic Trash,\" which helps keep our floors clean while making cleanup time exciting.\r\n\r\nAnother classroom favorite is the new crayon sharpener! The new bookshelf has helped us separate our picture books from our drawing and coloring books, making it easier for students to find inspiration and explore art independently. The drawer organizers at each table has been a game changer for accessibility and organization. Now, supplies like glue sticks, scissors, and markers are within reach, which helps students transition between activities smoothly and take more responsibility for cleanup.\r\n\r\nOur new storage containers and bags have helped us keep materials like blocks, watercolors, sculpting tools, craft supplies, and projects organized and easy to locate. This organization has reduced clutter, creating a calmer and more creative environment. The addition of plastic ramekins with lids has also helped reduce paint waste and mess, making setup and cleanup much more efficient.\r\n\r\nThe cleaning supplies have made an equally big impact. Our new broom and Swiffer mop have replaced worn-out tools, helping us handle spills and messes quickly and safely. Magic sponges and Lysol wipes have made cleaning tables faster and easier, giving us more time to focus on art and stay healthy. These texts serve as the foundation of our government and the guiding principles of our democracy. Through shared reading and discussion, students will not only learn about the structure of government and the rights guaranteed to citizens, but also gain a deeper understanding of the courage, debate, and vision that shaped the founding of our nation. Reading these texts together encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and respect for differing perspectives—skills that are just as essential today as they were in 1776 and 1787.\r\n\r\nIn a world where many children are accustomed to reading only from screens, it is increasingly important to place real books in their hands. The physical act of holding a book, turning its pages, and marking passages with sticky notes or highlights helps students form a personal connection to the text. Books slow the pace of reading, allowing time for reflection, discussion, and comprehension. For many students, this tactile experience sparks curiosity and builds a sense of ownership over their learning. When children see themselves as active readers—engaging with print, asking questions, and sharing ideas—the process of learning history becomes meaningful and memorable.\r\n\r\nI am truly excited to begin reading the books that accompany our history unit on the founding of the United States. These selections bring the past to life, offering vivid stories and perspectives that help students imagine what it was like to live during the nation's earliest days. Whether they are reading about the drafting of the Constitution, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, or the struggles faced by ordinary citizens seeking liberty and representation, students will see how these events connect to the freedoms they experience today. Literature provides an emotional and human lens through which to study history, allowing young readers to understand not only what happened, but why it mattered.\r\n\r\nOur reading time will also emphasize the power of shared inquiry. As students read aloud together, they will learn to listen attentively, express their ideas respectfully, and support their opinions with evidence from the text. Through guided questions and group discussion, they will examine themes such as justice, equality, and the responsibilities of citizenship. These conversations will help students see that the Constitution and the Declaration were not just written for the past—they are living documents that continue to influence our nation's laws, values, and identity today.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the reading activities will align with our fifth-grade English Language Arts standards by integrating historical content with literacy skills. Students will analyze key ideas and details, determine the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, and compare points of view between authors and historical figures. They will practice summarizing sections of text, identifying main ideas, and explaining how specific passages contribute to the overall understanding of the founding era. These reading experiences will build both historical knowledge and academic confidence, empowering students to think critically about how the words of the Founders still shape their world.\r\n\r\nUltimately, this unit is about more than learning facts or memorizing dates. It is about connecting students to the enduring ideals of freedom, democracy, and civic responsibility. By reading these foundational texts together—on paper, in their hands—students will experience the joy of discovery and the pride of belonging to a nation built on shared principles. Holding a book may seem like a small act, but in that moment, a child connects to centuries of history, ideas, and voices that continue to define who we are as Americans. That is the heart of why I teach reading and history together: to remind students that the story of the United States is still being written, and they are part of its next chapter","fullyFundedDate":1755690217248,"projectUrl":"project/class-set-of-books/9622166/","projectTitle":"Class Set of Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9844941_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733370561809","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9844941"},{"teacherId":9587654,"projectId":8892888,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our project this past school year. The clay, Play-Doh, and paint you provided filled our art curriculum with tactile, hands-on experiences that created lasting memories for our K-5 students. When the boxes of supplies arrived in February 2025, the children's faces lit up with sheer excitement. The younger students cheered at the sight of the vibrant new tubs of Play-Doh, while our older students were intrigued by the promise of creating with real clay. This project transformed our art days and allowed students to have a new medium to explore.\r\n\r\nStudents used these materials in a variety of ways. For K-2 students, the Play-Doh provided a source of wonder. On free-choice days, students shaped colorful creatures and patterns, and created scenes to tell stories. One kindergarten student, who often struggled with fine motor skills, diligently rolled out Play-Doh into long, thin \"snakes.\" With each day, control improved, and by the end of the year, the student was creating detailed figures that were proudly shown to classmates. For older students in grades 3-5, the real magic came with clay. Students learned to pinch and smooth their own clay pinch pots. Focus and patience during the glazing and painting process were incredible, and students treated their art with immense respect. The joy on their faces when they took home their finished, painted, and sealed pots at the end of the year was truly heartwarming. They had a tangible piece of their hard work to share with their families.\r\n\r\nThe contribution has built a foundation for creative exploration that will continue to benefit students for years to come. Looking ahead, students' experience with these new materials sparked interest in more complex artistic techniques. Older students are now asking about throwing clay on a wheel and creating more elaborate sculptures, which has inspired ideas for future projects. Younger students' successful experience with Play-Doh has prepared them for more complex art forms as they grow. The confidence and joy that the gift has brought to students will surely inspire their artistic endeavors for a long time.
