My students in grades K–5 come to art just once a week, but the excitement they bring with them fills the room every time. We are a small-town school, and many of my students come from low-income families who do not have access to art supplies at home. For them, the art room is a special place where they can paint, build, sculpt, and create freely. They especially love hands-on materials like Legos, Play-Doh, and paint. This year, our school has a record number of students with special needs. Many of my students benefit from sensory support, opportunities for emotional regulation, and activities that strengthen fine motor skills. Art gives them a safe space to express themselves, build confidence, and feel successful. I often receive sweet notes and drawings from students, reminding me how meaningful this creative time is for them.
