In addition to students adjusting to a new country, new culture, new language and new social connections, they face many \"adult\" responsibilities such as being a wage-earner, translating for family medical and legal appointments, childcare and household chores. Emotional stress can impact their ability to focus and express themselves in the classroom. As a teacher trained in teaching mindfulness to children, I this year I created a routine: a daily\"Take a Pause\" before every class begins. \r\n\r\nStarting with breathing exercises like box breathing and belly breathing, I have added mindful listening, speaking and interactive warm-ups to the start of each class. The supplies you helped me purchase are integral to these activities! The seat cushions, rain sticks, mindfulness cards and meditation tools have the students staying curious and open about how simple it can be to \"stop\" and practice being more aware of our surroundings. It is helping them to manage stress, communicate better, and feel more compassionate toward themselves and others. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity and thoughtfulness! One student yelled, \"These are for us?!\" while another immediately claimed a favorite color and settled in to read. Our dance studio has always been full of energy and movement, but now it's also a place where students can relax, focus, and feel at home during study hall and enrichment time.\r\n\r\nThese new seats have made such a difference for my 9th and 10th graders. They love being able to choose where and how they sit—some spread out on the floor cushions with their books, while others perch on stools to work on writing or language activities. I've noticed a huge boost in focus and calm during quieter class times.\r\n\r\nSoon, we'll be using the stools for an upcoming drumming residency, where students will explore rhythm, teamwork, and cultural expression through music. A determined group of students saw the need for a \"Reflection Space\" for quiet contemplation, mindfulness, reading or creative expression in our Health Education class; they were so passionate about this project that when the supplies came in they spent many of their lunch-periods and after- school hours designing the space: they made signage to explain to the other students what the purpose of the space was, and how to best utilize it; they maintained the space; and they selected each item, including books, affirmation crds, an oil diffuser, art supplies, furnishing, and mindfulness tools. This was so rewarding to me as their teacher -- to see them act on the lessons they learned about strengthening teens' health dimnesions in an inclusive, accessible and healing way. The other factor that I admire is their desire to have students write about their experiences with \"entry journals\", a requirement for using the space. None of this would have been possible without your generosity. I made sure the students knew that there were friends -- and strangers -- who are enough about their health to fund their project. All of these performances were done for the incoming 11th grade students and were coupled with mini workshops run by and for the students.\r\nIn short, your donations supported us in creating a space where students were teaching each other about topics that are important to them. They helped them to take their acting roles more seriously, and inspired many to show a side of themselves that we had never seen before! One of the students leading this charge is studying interior design when she attends college this c oming fall, and is very eager to get the space up and running. The students plan to also create written guidelines for students about how to intentionally use the space for its special purpose. These materials have helped me differentiate in many ways. I've added this as an activity extension for word searches on paper, with student choice of words from the word search to dot and dash, so that the students can write the words themselves, as well as group activities, where one student says a word, another writes it, and they check their understanding with each other.
