Our students truly enjoyed this hands-on experience, and it was an incredible way to help them understand just how fragile and important the brain is.\r\n\r\nThe lab gave students the opportunity to see these concepts in a very real and visual way. Using the egg as a model for the brain, students were able to observe firsthand how vulnerable the brain can be to impact and how important proper protection is. They were especially excited to see how a stronger, more protective helmet could help protect the fragile \"brain\" inside.\r\n\r\nThis activity created a meaningful connection between what students learn in the classroom and situations they may encounter in everyday life. Rather than simply reading about concussions and brain injuries, they were able to see, experience, and understand the importance of prevention and safety.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the students had fun while learning. They worked together, discussed their observations, and were genuinely engaged throughout the activity. Experiences like this make learning memorable and help our students develop the critical-thinking and teamwork skills they will need as they pursue careers in healthcare.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping us provide engaging, hands-on learning opportunities. My students were incredibly excited when they saw the new knitting machine, colorful yarn, stuffing, and supplies arrive. They immediately began imagining what they could make and, even more importantly, who they could help. Students are learning to use the knitting machine and yarn to create handmade items that can bring comfort and joy to foster and disadvantaged youth, essential workers, hospice care recipients, chemotherapy patients, and pediatric patients. The Poly-Fil allows us to expand into soft, comforting handmade creations, while the heavy-duty storage bags help students organize and protect their materials and completed donations.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project has been watching students discover that learning a new skill can also become an act of kindness. As they work together, they are practicing measurement, pattern recognition, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and creativity. They quickly learn that handmade projects do not always work perfectly the first time! They have to troubleshoot, make adjustments, start over when necessary, and persevere until they create something they are proud to give to someone else. Students are also learning responsibility by organizing supplies, caring for the equipment, and working together toward a shared goal.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue developing students' knitting and crafting skills so we can increase the number and variety of items we create and donate. As students become more confident, they will take greater responsibility for planning projects, selecting materials, creating items, and preparing our finished gifts for donation. This project is becoming much more than an after-school craft activity—it is an opportunity for students to experience the pride that comes from using their own time, creativity, and talents to serve others. The mini fridge and microwave have already made a tremendous difference for students who remain on campus for clubs, academic support, and other activities. They can now safely store and warm up food instead of trying to make it through a long afternoon without something to eat. Students were excited to see these additions and immediately recognized that this was a space created with their needs in mind.\r\n\r\nOur new shelving, clear storage bags, magnetic organizers, and over-the-fridge caddy are helping us make much better use of our limited classroom space. Students can easily see where materials belong, access what they need, and help keep our shared space organized. The extension cord and charging station also provide a convenient place for students to power their devices while completing assignments, researching, collaborating, or participating in after-school activities. These may seem like simple changes, but together they have made our classroom more functional and inviting.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building an after-school environment where students can comfortably stay on campus to learn, participate in clubs, work together, and connect with supportive peers and adults. Having an organized space, access to food storage and preparation, cleaner air, and dependable charging options removes some of the everyday barriers that can interfere with participation. I have also found it difficult to ask for donations over the years as I wanted to avoid burdening others with our teams own adversity. It has been heartwarming to see and experience the generosity of the community as you assisted our team in funding this project.\r\n\r\nYou helped our team restock our volleyballs, provided us with a new ball cart to replace a broken one, and also helped us get our very first setting target (a piece of equipment that many higher level teams use to train their players). We have already started using all the equipment as our season has gotten underway. Students were extremely excited to see the new balls they received as these were the same high-quality model as the ones found at other schools. Practice has been running more efficiently with the addition of another ball cart as students have been able to gather balls more easily in between drills. The setters on the team have been enjoying the challenge of the setting target as it provides them with instant, and visible, feedback on their setting.\r\n\r\nWith the addition of this equipment, practices have become safer, more engaging, and more efficient. This allows students to identify and correct errors more efficiently rather than waiting for graded assignments to discover their mistakes.\r\n\r\nWriting on the mini whiteboards also increase student engagement and participation because every student has an opportunity to actively respond to questions and demonstrate their thinking.
