To truly reach a child you must educate him or her through the heart. The aforementioned statements drive my instruction, especially the selection of literature that I put in front of my students. It is important for students to see themselves in the books they read and write about. I expect students to explore issues impacting their community through reading and writing. Our reading and writing expectations are grounded on essential questions that address issues impacting their communities. Students wear different hats in an English class; they are researchers, scholars, authors, scientists, and historians. The novels, such as A Piece of Cake, I Love Yous Are for White People, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, and They Called Us Enemy, among others, will help students explore a variety of issues that impact young adults, especially the loss of language, the journey to find a home in this country, and feel comfortable in their own skin. Students will explore how authors present similar issues through informational texts and literature. The goal is to guide students in exploring how the skills learned in class can influence and transform their lives and communities.
