The balcony has quickly become a meaningful extension of our classroom where students can learn, explore, and practice important skills in a calm outdoor environment. Since receiving these materials, we have been using the space daily for small group instruction, sensory breaks, hands-on activities, and social skill practice.\r\n\r\nOne special moment was seeing students work together to help set up the balcony space for the first time. Many of our students benefit from structured outdoor learning opportunities, and they were eager to explore the new materials. Students smiled, pointed excitedly, and immediately wanted to sit and participate in activities outside. Some students who typically struggle to remain engaged indoors were especially motivated and focused while working on the balcony.\r\n\r\nThe new supplies have also helped create a more comfortable and organized environment where students can practice communication, cooperative play, and academic tasks in a less restrictive setting. We have already used the area for reading groups, art activities, and movement breaks that help students regulate and return to class ready to learn.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to continue incorporating the balcony into our daily classroom routines. Students will use the space for science observations, collaborative projects, and functional life skills activities. We are excited to continue building a positive learning environment where our students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. As a first year teacher, most of my in-class materials have been passed down from other teachers who no longer needed them, so my students were overjoyed to have brand-new materials in our classroom. They were especially excited for the new toys that they could play with during our free choice time, as well as the snacks that they could eat if they were feeling hungry throughout the school day (five/six year olds are constantly hungry)!
