As many educators struggle to meet the needs of their students in this global pandemic, the 8th grade scholars in my learning community are being inequitably impacted. Even prior to our school shifting to distance learning, access to healthy food and quality resources have been a challenge. The need for effective physical education is more evident than ever. As our school's Physical Education Teacher, I take pride in guiding students toward developing lifelong healthy habits and I find joy in the process. Teaching is HEART work. Facilitating PE virtually through Zoom sessions has not been nearly as effective as in person learning. However, one positive shift I recognize is the chance to focus less on sports and more on healthy lifestyles. While students really miss being able to engage in sports, our personal reflections and collective explorations of what it means to be healthy and practice self-care has provided us with hope. One challenge that our class has experienced is individual access to enough space. Many of the students I work with live in multi-generational households and finding enough room to engage in physical activity has not come easy. This project is a call-out for support. By providing our 2020-21 8th Grade PE cohort with technology to accurately track their heart rates, these young scholars can engage in physical activities accessible to them while being critical of its impact on their hearts. These heart rate monitors will not only help in facilitating a unit on heart rate for this cohort of 8th graders, but also for the generations of scholars that follow.
