Your generosity has made a difference for my students and me.\r\n\r\nThe flexible seating options quickly became a meaningful addition to our classroom. Before receiving the stadium floor seats, students would often choose to sit on the hard classroom floor if they wanted to work together because they knew we were not going to ask another student to move out of their seat. Instead, students would compromise and make it work however they could. Now, students have comfortable stadium seats that allow them to collaborate more naturally throughout class. It has become such a fun and welcoming addition to our classroom environment.\r\n\r\nThe children's books in the math classroom have also been incredibly special. Ninth graders are still children after all, and they genuinely love being read to. Students are so engaged in reading and discussing stories about mathematicians and STEM leaders who remind them of themselves. One day, we even sat in one large circle as a class discussing one of the books together and connecting it to our own experiences and future goals. The conversations were thoughtful, honest, and full of excitement. It honestly felt just like an elementary classroom in the best possible way.\r\n\r\nThe classroom environment has also transformed because of your generosity. It is always such a great compliment when new or returning students walk into the classroom and are immediately in awe of the physical space. In order to create a space for learning, we must first create a place where students feel welcomed, safe, comfortable, and valued.\r\n\r\nAll of these resources may seem like \"just items,\" but in a ninth-grade classroom, they help build a classroom environment that students genuinely look forward to being part of every day. Sometimes, time flies so quickly that students exclaim, \"Wow, it is already time to go?\" as I announce it is time to pack up before the bell rings. No matter how many times students say it, it always pulls at my heartstrings because it means students are genuinely engaged and enjoying learning.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting my students and believing in our classroom community. Your kindness and generosity truly mean so much to us.","fullyFundedDate":1746785921423,"projectUrl":"project/stem-classroom-for-freshmen/9208997/","projectTitle":"STEM Classroom for Freshmen","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Reyes- Hernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9966777_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742867612385","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/reyes-hernandez"},{"teacherId":2661127,"projectId":10046910,"letterContent":"Your gift of whiteboards to 3 classrooms at our school for Elevate and writing, makes our schoolwork more engaging. Our Elevate program helps students decode words and our Reciprocal Teaching structures help students to comprehend a text by rereading, reading on, chunking word parts, making predictions, clarifying questions, and summarizing the main idea of a text. By having resources in our classrooms that make learning relaxing, it lowers the affective filter and helps students benefit more from their instruction. Your generosity is appreciated. These materials are helping me create a learning environment where students can think deeply, show their work, and feel supported as they build confidence in math.\r\n\r\nThe whiteboards have been especially meaningful because they allow students to make their thinking visible. Students can work through problems, discuss strategies with classmates, and revise their thinking in real time. This has helped create more opportunities for collaboration and mathematical conversation in our classroom.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped strengthen the routines and environment of our classroom. In our English learners classroom, we implement Guided Language Acquisition Design strategies. We use a Narrative Input Chart to provide background information on the characters, setting, and plot, prior to reading the novel. During the reading of the novel, we use Expert Forms (graphic organizers) to summarize the story by chunking information as we read and annotating the text. Students read with partners and check for understanding with the teacher during the week. On Fridays, we pull small groups to reteach any confusing academic vocabulary words and we do Gallery Walks, matching, and sorting of key ideas that we read about during the week.\r\n I am introducing Hexagonal Thinking into class by using hexagons with key concepts on them and having students match similar ideas and have conversations with their cooperative learning partners. We have Socratic Seminars that defend our opinions about the characters' motives. At the end of the teacher-facilitated discussion, students summarize their own thoughts on the discussion. Most of my students are males and they appreciate reading about Odysseus, who has adventures and who is brave and athletic. I have many football players in my class who enjoy athletic protagonists. Having graphic novels makes the plot more enjoyable!
