My freshmen Algebra classroom is filled with students from many different backgrounds, experiences, and socioeconomic situations. Our school is a Title I school, and many of my students come from hardworking families who make countless sacrifices to support their children’s education. At the beginning of the year, many students are nervous because they have never experienced a math classroom like ours before. Students stand at whiteboards, collaborate with classmates, and genuinely enjoy learning through problem-solving together. For many students, this becomes the first math class where they realize they can do math and even enjoy it! One of my favorite moments is when students say, “Wait… it is already time to leave?” No matter how many times students say it, it always pulls at my heartstrings because it means students are genuinely engaged and enjoying learning mathematics, whether they say it directly or not.
