Because of you, we now have a beautiful classroom gong — and it has quickly become one of the most practical (and surprisingly powerful) tools in our space.\r\n\r\nWhen it first arrived, my students were excited but also a little skeptical. A few thought it was just going to be a \"giant noise-maker.\" So of course, we had to try it immediately. The first time we struck it, the room got very quiet. Not because I asked them to be quiet — it just happened naturally. The sound lingered, and they instinctively stopped talking to listen. One student said, \"Oh... that's actually kind of calming.\" That was the moment I knew this was going to work.\r\n\r\nWe now use the gong at the start of class as a reset. One student gently strikes it, and everyone takes a breath while the sound fades. It's simple, it takes less than a minute, and it has made a noticeable difference. Instead of spending the first five minutes trying to settle everyone down, we transition quickly and more smoothly into learning. It has helped with focus, especially during longer class periods.\r\n\r\nWe also use it before quizzes or presentations. A few students have told me it helps them feel less anxious. That alone makes this project worth it. In our Healing Steps circles and Mountain Club leadership meetings, the gong marks the beginning and end of discussions. It gives structure without me having to talk over students. The sound itself does the work.\r\n\r\nOne specific moment stands out. During a recent reflection circle, students were sharing about challenges they've faced this year. The energy was thoughtful but a little restless. After we used the gong to reset, the tone shifted. Students listened more carefully to one another. The conversation deepened. It wasn't dramatic — just more focused and respectful. That's exactly what we hope for in these spaces.\r\n\r\nBeyond social-emotional learning, we're also tying the gong into academics. In science, we've talked about vibration and sound waves. In history, we've discussed how different cultures use sound in ceremonies and gatherings. Students are beginning to understand that something as simple as a tone can shape a community experience.\r\n\r\nNext, students will rotate responsibility for setting the tone at the start of class. We're building leadership into the routine so it's not just \"my\" tool — it belongs to them.
