My students are eager to learn everyday. They come to school excited and happy every day. We are a low-income, higher poverty school district. Our classroom goal is to build a community of love, acceptance, and tolerance for everyone where we can have meaningful learning experiences.
Flexible seating will help my students stay on task and allow their minds as well as their bodies to be active and successful.
A flexible classroom promotes a less teacher-centered area and more student-centered room. It creates an open learning environment and encourages those students who struggle staying focused because they can't stay still. Having flexible seating options allows the children to stay on task and be successful.
Oskar Cymerman in a Teaching Channel post stated "I’ve become convinced that traditional educational settings dull the senses. We know that breaks and interruptions after periods of focused activity actually help in learning, yet we ask our students to sit still for an hour or more with little freedom of movement….I’ve come to the conclusion that desks promote compliance, while coffee shop-style seating encourages community-building through increased and intentional emphasis on communication and collaboration."
My Project
The addition of these six wobble chairs will allow additional students the opportunity to use these flexible seating options. Many children have difficulty focusing while being required to remain seated in a standard school desk and chair. Allowing these students the opportunity to chose a wobble stool where they can wiggle and wobble while working, yet not distract or disturb others is invaluable to their success. These stools will allow my students the freedom to excel and flourish. Too often, children who have difficulty remaining stationary are unsuccessful academically because their focus is on sitting still instead of the school work. Wobble stools will allow them to feel accomplished!
