What Did You Have for Supper, Mr. Owl?!

Help me give my students a peek into the role of a predator in the food chain.

This project expired on May 15, 2024.

My Project

Owl pellets are like nature's own time capsules. By carefully dissecting them, students will practice scientific inquiry and detective work to uncover the hidden secrets. It's a perfect blend of science and mystery that stimulates curiosity and critical thinking. This hands-on activity is more than just a science lesson; it's a unique journey that allows students to step into the role of a naturalist and explore the intricate web of our ecosystem. Instead of just reading about food chains and predator-prey relationships in textbooks, our students will get a direct view of these concepts in action. The owl pellet dissection allows learners to see firsthand what owls contribute to the environment and how energy is transferred within an ecosystem.

Owls naturally regurgitate owl pellets; this means we are not harming any wildlife for our studies.

It's an excellent way to teach our students about ethical scientific practices and respect for all living things. By engaging in the Owl Pellet Lab, students will gain a deeper appreciation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This experience can ignite a passion for STEM that may influence their educational paths and future careers. There's nothing quite like the look of wonder and accomplishment on a student's face when they piece together the diet of an owl from the bones found in a pellet. It's a moment of real, tangible discovery that can inspire a lifelong love of learning.

We can't wait to embark on this extraordinary educational journey with our 5th graders. Help all of them to get ready to uncover the mysteries in the owl pellets!
