Weaving Warmth & Kindness

My Students

At my school, all students have an opportunity to participate in a staff sponsored club once a week during the last 40 minutes of the day. This allows each child to take a break from academics, have productive fun and, whether they realize it or not, to practice self-care.

Many of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and do not have the means to participate in after school activities.

I am a school counselor at my school and the majority of the work I do with students is centered around building up their sense of self worth. Social Emotional Learning is found not just in Classroom Guidance Lessons or Small Groups that focus on learning specific skills. Social Emotional Learning takes place when students are given the opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular club of their choosing where they will find a sense of belonging.

My Project

The yarn and extra weaving looms that I have requested will help the students who are participating in the "during-school-hours-club" that I sponsor by supplying them with the tools that they need to create their own toboggan or scarf for the winter months. Once they are done with their own creation, the students will then be allowed to choose to weave a hat for babies at our local hospital or a red, white, and blue scarf for veterans in our community.

Having enough yarn and extra weaving looms for these projects is our biggest need for WMMS's Weaving Warmth and Kindness Club.
