It was like Christmas! Everything was boxed and packed so perfectly. The students took turns opening and putting the items in order.\r\nEach one of them received a pot, some dirt to fill it with, and could choose whether to plant a flower seed or a vegetable seed. Most chose the vegetable ones.\r\nThey each kept a journal of what progress was made for two months. They had so many different entries. \r\nOnce the plants began to grow, the students took them home to plant in the yard or a pot. \r\nI would love to do this project again ...It was such a wonderful one. To see many of the students never grow anything...it brought such curiosity and happiness to them. \r\n\r\nGrateful hearts and sprouting thanks for sponsoring our \"Let's Grow Again\". We connected with the local Food Hub that has the same mission. Students absolutely loved growing their own plants. Each student took home their own plant to grow this summer. At school, we started an herb garden and a small raised bed with tomatoes and peppers. Our hydroponic tower came with missing parts so we are working to rectify that so we can start using that this fall. My students will be moving up to high school and I have changed schools with them, so many of them will get to continue this project for years to come. Right now, we are setting up the raised beds at my new location and working on the hydroponic tower. WE are very excited for these baby steps and we now have materials to move forward to our next steps. This year we will expand the garden and begin distribution in the Spring.","fullyFundedDate":1734703735146,"projectUrl":"project/the-food-revolution-spartans-serve/8937452/","projectTitle":"The Food Revolution: Spartans Serve","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Wilson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9585511_orig.jpg?crop=2988,2988,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753118404050","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9585511"},{"teacherId":9585511,"projectId":8935192,"letterContent":"What a year! This project was cut short at its original location. Unfortunately, I had to move schools. After the move, I only ever interacted with these original Impact Students online. However, we did have a lot of fun and learned about food, its preparation, and its history. \r\nStudents used the books to research dishes that fit certain criteria based on preparation method or ingredients. They learned about dishes and meal customs all over the world, both before and after the great cultural exchange during the age of transatlantic exploration. Students made menus for different areas of the world that represented the cuisine before and after the Columbian exchange. \r\nStudents chose recipes to try at home with their families. Once their recipe was chosen, they created a new cookbook page of their own. The classes compiled ingredient lists and then worked together to grow the freshest ingredients possible to use in the recipes. \r\nWe were unable to cook at the school together because of the aforementioned situation; however, every student took home seedlings for the needed ingredients, the recipes, and gardening instructions; we have been sharing pictures of growing plants on the website we created for our Food Revolution.\r\nThese students will be entering my new school in two years so this project is moving to my new school with me where it will have time to develop a little for when the students come around to use this cookbook library again. In the meantime, my new school has allowed me the space to teach an elective class on food.","fullyFundedDate":1733255581706,"projectUrl":"project/its-a-food-revolution/8935192/","projectTitle":"It's a Food Revolution!","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Wilson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9585511_orig.jpg?crop=2988,2988,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753118404050","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9585511"},{"teacherId":6694706,"projectId":9116122,"letterContent":"I am writing to offer my immense gratitude. The donation of cow eyes and dissection scissors was so impactful for my students. The cow eye dissection offered a chance for students to get hands-on with their learning of how vision works. Students actually held in their hands the parts of the eye, including the lens, cornea, and iris. They disassembled the eye and then reassembled it to learn the path that light takes into the eye. They located the optic nerve and learned how messages get to the brain that allow vision. It was an exciting and memorable lesson that could not have happened without your help.
