Weaving Our Way To Friendship And Cooperation

My students need two weaving looms and an assortment of yarns.

Ms. Lee PS 219 Kennedy - King
Brooklyn, NY Grades PreK-2

In recent years, the focus of education has been on reading, literacy and math. I believe that it is an integral part of children's education, but as a pre-kindergarten teacher, I have learned that the best way to provide the base and structure for future experiences in reading, literacy, and math is through play and art in the early years. I am a pre-k teacher in Brooklyn. My students are learning the importance of working together and cooperation, while learning their ABC's and 123's. To provide the groundwork for their future education, I want my students to express their thoughts and feelings through art. Traditional art sessions involve markers, glue, construction paper, crayons, and paint. I want to kick it up a notch and introduce weaving with a loom. My students have tried to weave a mat with construction paper, and while it is frustrating, they learned that the end result was worth it. A weaving loom would enable my students to see their work three-dimensionally. It would also involve a multi-step process over the course of several days. Children would need to think about where they would place the string and whether it created the correct pattern when they weaved it in and out of the set strings. This project would take many days and would require a lot of children to take turns working on it, as their attention span is limited in this stage of their development. The building process would help foster the foundation for future math and science lessons. Before they started, they would need to think about the colors they needed, then to think about the patterns they could create, and count out the weaves as they were weaving. The end results would be a beautiful mat or blanket that they would be able to share with other classes or people. But the major goal that I want to achieve is to show my students that learning can be fun and that they can be learning while having fun!
