This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
It thrills me to be able to provide my third graders with choices of books they crave to read. Finding books they enjoy reading, makes the task of writing much easier. "The more you read, the more know."
My school has diversified learners from mostly low income families.
Last year began with a few students reading on kindergarten level, several on first, many on second and the remaining ones on third or higher. We love to share their reading goals with each other and their families. Students that enjoy reading tend to have better scores in language arts and their comprehension scores usually increase more than two grade levels in a year. Many of them enjoy reading Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Magic Tree House books. My students tell me that they don't have books on their reading level at home so they are dependent on me to help them find appropriate resources.
My Project
During the day we will have a station called, "Read to Self." Each student will have a container with ten books on their own reading level. I want to help students increase their vocabulary and fluency reading rate. They will learn how to focus on what they are reading and become better writers too!
I appreciate anyone that wants to give to my classroom.
When I open the box of new books, I can only imagine that their eyes will sparkle and they will beg to be the first ones to dive into a new book. It will change their lives because someone donated their money to help them become better students. Thank you for your generosity.
