My school has diversified learners from mostly low income families. Last year began with a few students reading on kindergarten level, several on first, many on second and the remaining ones on third or higher. We love to share their reading goals with each other and their families. Students that enjoy reading tend to have better scores in language arts and their comprehension scores usually increase more than two grade levels in a year. Many of them enjoy reading Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Magic Tree House books. My students tell me that they don't have books on their reading level at home so they are dependent on me to help them find appropriate resources.
