I am super excited that I am teaching the full day, four-year-old, preschool class this year in a high poverty public school. People sometimes have the perception that we are well-funded because of our location, which couldn't be further from the truth! My students are mostly minority and ESL students. They are a very active, affectionate, and funny bunch of kiddos.
My students want to be challenged and are very curious and excited when new items and curriculum are added to the classroom.
I have been teaching for 23 years, and I want my students to want to come to school every day. I want materials that will challenge them, as well as provide fun experiences for them on a daily basis. This is my main focus for them as their teacher.
In Preschool, choice time is a big part of our day. It gives students the opportunity to play with friends, use their imaginations, try new things, and challenge themselves in a safe environment. For teachers, it let's us assess language skills, social-emotional growth, student interests, and many other things. When we came back from remote learning all students needed to have individual materials. There are definitely a few favorite centers so it was difficult to have enough to go around. We are now starting to let 2 students at a time in a center but still distanced.
Since we can not have a dramatic play center set up this year, I would like to provide more dramatic play materials that 2 students can share at a time.
Two of the favorite places to play is the farm house with animals and the city centers. It really shows that students need, and want, to have imaginative play! I am asking for a doll house with people and accessories, as well as a firehouse with trucks and firefighters so that my students can have more options for imaginative play. Thanks for reading my proposal and for valuing Early Childhood Education!
