This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over the past year students in my class have been enjoying the "News 2 You" portion of the Unique curriculum. Their skills in all academic areas have greatly improved and their interest in learning is higher than ever! We would love to start the new school year with the full curriculum subscription!

We are a classroom supporting students who primarily qualify for Special Education services under the categories of Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities.

Our program is a district level program that supports students in a self-contained classroom setting. Most students in our classroom come from working class families and receive free lunches. Our students work best when structure is provided in their daily lives by creating visuals, schedules and routines. Many of the students in our class are working on life skills, daily living skills, functional academics, behavior and communication.

My Project

Unique Learning System is an student standards-based curriculum specifically designed for students with special needs. Students will study monthly themes such as "electricity" or "government". The otherwise difficult topics will be broken down so that government is taught through making choices and other lessons that the student’s can relate to. Each lesson will be introduced whole group by projecting stories, which we'll read whole group and then individual students will take turns coming to read portions. Although not all of my students are readers, I will also use pictures throughout to allow them to read or better be able to read the stories. After reading I will display the comprehension worksheet on the screen while the students have their own copy on their desks or glue photos in order if they are unable to write. Throughout the week we'll build on the theme with different guided activities. Unique provides all materials and lessons needed for our special learners.
