My Students

My students are preparing to have access to opportunities to achieve their dreams. They are refining their critical-thinking skills, increasing their organization and time management capacities, and creating a ​community with each other. They are smart, beautiful, and important in their discovery of leadership and identity development.

Almost all of my students are fluent in more than one language.

They are leaders in their families and their commitment to education is powerful. Each day, they refine their self-control and deepen their commitment to becoming tomorrow's leaders.

My Project

We recently finished the first book by Benjamin Alire Saenz, "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe." This October, he published the sequel to this text. As students finished the first book in class yesterday, several were left with unanswered questions: What happens to Ari's relationship with his Dad? Will he resolve the tensions with his brother? What happens next between Ari and Dante?

As students learned there is a sequel, "Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World", they became so excited to read it on their own.

They were disappointed we wouldn't read it as a class, but I told them they were free to do so on their own or in small groups with friends. The handful of copies I have purchased are already checked out, and I have a waiting list of students to read this text.

While I am charged to cover eighth grade English language arts standards in my classroom, my biggest joy is seeing. genuine passion and drive to read. Authentic conversations, self-reflection, and curiosity to learn more come from reading a strong text. With this project, I hope to continue to support students' individual drive for understanding.
