Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from every zip code in North San Diego County, and they represent a very diverse population both socioeconomically and racially. We try our best to make sure the needs of every student are met and that they all can participate in meaningful science!
Our students need to get outside!
Many of our students have never had a chance to participate in field work or real data collection, and this will help them explore science in their community.
My Project
Our classroom is partnering with a local non-profit (The Escondido Creek Conservancy) to take over their water quality testing and try to reintroduce native trout to their local watershed. Chemistry students will provide the water quality data, but we need professional equipment to run comparable tests!
Our data will help inform the reintroduction of trout species to the Escondido Creek.
This new equipment will allow us to directly compare our results to previous tests done on the creek. Students need both chemical testing equipment and bacterial testing equipment to create a cohesive picture of stream health, which they will share with park rangers to inform decision making.
