Technology to Bridge the COVID-19 Gap

Help me give my students Amazon Fire tablets to differentiate centers and bridge the COVID-19 gap.

My Students

Our school has a unique model, in which each of the grade levels has only one pod, which consists of a computer room, a large center room, and three small group instruction rooms. There are three homeroom teachers per grade, so we have up to 90 third-graders in our pod. We usually have a large span of instructional levels, but because of COVID-19, that has increased. We have several students that are working on fourth-grade material all the way to students who are working on Kindergarten material. We differentiate our small group lessons based on the individual needs of the students, and we are finding there is a wider gap between those that are on grade level and those who are not.

The last “normal” school year our students have had was in Kindergarten.

This has affected their mental health as well as their learning. We see a lot more students with anxiety and a lack of coping skills for their emotions. Because of covid, we have noticed a gap in not only academic development but also in social-emotional development.

My Project

We want to increase the impact of our centers by including more technology that will help us to deepen differentiation within our centers. We would use the new technology to model different activities to practice the skills taught in small groups and allow the students to do interactive slideshows, as well as a reading and listening center.

COVID-19 has highlighted the gaps in student learning; we want to bring technology to our centers to help us bridge that gap.

For example, we could make a video of ourselves teaching a specific skill, or providing instructions for an activity using manipulatives. Then the students could follow along, and continue to practice that skill. We have also put together many different interactive slideshows that allow a student to click through and make self-checks, which is a powerful tool in learning. We also want to do a center for reading and listening where a student will read aloud, and go back and listen to themselves. This is also a powerful tool to help the students become more animated readers. We could also utilize google classroom to assign tasks to the students, we could even use Nearpod for more interactive learning.

Our students spend one hour in centers each day; this technology would help us make the most of every minute, by being able to further differentiate the instruction given.
