With the binders, laminating pouches, and paper, I am creating durable portfolios that will last for years and serve as a lasting reminder of their hard work.\r\n\r\nMy students are already taking pride in their portfolios. They love looking back at earlier work and noticing their own improvement. During conferences, they are able to share these portfolios with their families, helping them reflect on their progress and feel proud of their accomplishments.\r\n\r\nThese portfolios are becoming a powerful tool for both assessment and student ownership of learning. My kindergarteners are using watercolors to add detailed illustrations to their stories, and the level of thought and creativity they show is incredible. The dot painters are supporting fine motor development while also giving students another engaging way to create. With plenty of paper available, students are free to explore, practice, and share their learning through art.\r\n\r\nI am seeing higher engagement, more enthusiasm, and stronger connections to our lessons when students have a creative outlet. My students are using the materials to practice letter identification, matching uppercase and lowercase letters, and building simple words. One of our favorite moments was during center time when students worked together to \"fish\" letters from the alphabet soup and then raced to find the matching letter on their boards—there was so much excitement and cheering as they found their letters.\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were thrilled. They loved exploring the magnetic letters and couldn't wait to touch and move them around. The mailboxes have helped my students take ownership of their work and keep track of important papers, which is a big skill for kindergarteners. During center time, they love checking their folders, filing away their drawings, and proudly organizing the activities they've completed. It has not only brought structure to our routines, but it has also given them a sense of independence and responsibility.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our classroom now runs more smoothly, and my students can focus more on learning and less on searching for missing materials. Our class is uniquely created as a \"pod\" of first graders, with two large classrooms joined and three small classrooms built off of them for small group instruction. We have up to ninety students enrolled in our class, and three teachers to support them. We have used the flexible seating provided through this project in our two large classrooms, giving students more choice in their seating and work areas. In the pictures you can see that our surf seats are kept next to the bookcase, easily accessible for students that need to use them. The rockers are kept on both sides of the board and can be used anywhere in the room. The black stools are perfect for use at the computer tables against the walls, and we use the floor cushions throughout the room at the low tables.\r\n\r\nWhen the students entered our classroom and got to explore the new seating options, they were incredibly excited. As we explained to the students that the flexible seating was meant to be used as tools to help them engage and increase their focus, they had a conversation on how each seating option could be used, what that looks like, and what it does not look like. Now students are able to use whichever seat helps them be successful in class, when they need it, and where they need it. We have students that work well at the low tables and love that they can sit on a cushion instead of a hard chair or the floor, other students sit in the rockers to support their movement and use clipboards to do their work, and others need the surf seats where they can remove themselves from the hustle and bustle and sit somewhere quieter where they can focus. The students have a sense of independence and ownership of their learning because they can choose where it is happening and are learning how they can be successful.\r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for your generosity in contributing to our flexible seating project. We have seen the benefits that it makes in our classroom and know that it will be an asset in the years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1744033061773,"projectUrl":"project/empower-students-to-take-ownership-of-le/9209268/","projectTitle":"Empower Students to Take Ownership of Learning with Smart Seats","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Snow","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9974131"},{"teacherId":5693074,"projectId":9254229,"letterContent":"THANK you so much for your support in helping my students!
