Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“There was something else my mother did that I’ve always remembered: ‘Always look for the helpers,’ she’d tell me. ‘There’s always someone who is trying to help.’ I did, and I came to see that the world is full of doctors and nurses, police and firemen, volunteers, neighbors and friends who are ready to jump in to help when things go wrong.” ~Fred Rogers

Please help me instill in my students a desire to help others while learning important math skills.

Like Fred Rogers' mother, I aspire to teach my students to focus on the good in the world. I work at an inner-city elementary school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Coming from poverty, many of my students struggle to focus on their work. However, their focus improves when they are actively engaged in learning and can manipulate things with their hands. Reading engaging books about characters who they can relate to and solving real-world math problems will capture their attention and promote learning.

I love my students and want to provide them with engaging materials so they can succeed in the classroom and beyond.

My Project

What is going on in the world with COVID-19 is confusing and frightening to children.

Since children often learn best by following the examples of others, I'd like to create math lessons based on engaging books with characters who use money to help others and promote kindness.

The following books are heartwarming and inspirational! The books showcase how anyone can help others with small gestures, determination, and random acts of kindness. Math lessons will be based on these books to promote coin recognition and values, counting, coin combinations, problem-solving, and goal setting. Lessons will focus on money values and how money can have a value beyond itself.

The books will be used as whole group read alouds and during individual reading time. The magnetic boards and magnetic money manipulatives will be used for small group instruction. The hands-on materials will allow students to use individual magnetic whiteboards to learn essential money skills. Math problems will be based on how characters in the stories earned money to help others.

One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference: An inspirational tale based on a true story of a young boy from Ghana who turns a small loan into a thriving business that helps others.

Beatrice's Goat: Based on a true story of a girl from Africa who receives a goat from an anonymous donor. The goat provides milk and cheese which she sells to earn money to go to school.

The Power of a Penny: Abraham Lincoln Inspires a Nation: An inspirational book on the penny's history and how a penny can change the world.

A Chair for My Mother: An award-winning book about how a young girl, her mother, and her grandmother save coins to buy a comfortable chair to share with others after a fire destroys their home.
