Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Every day I work hard to ensure my students are receiving the best education through best practices. My goal is for all students to advance at least one grade level in reading and math, meet state standards and to become caring and responsible citizens.

My students come to school every day eager to learn and help one another.

My kids are empathetic, inquisitive about the world and do their best each day. Most of my students looped from first to second grade with me so we have become a family. Our school is a school of "peace and love" and my class exhibits this on a daily basis. School has become a safe place where life is "normal" at a time where there is much unrest in our community. This year every student receives a free breakfast and lunch every day.

My Project

I need to feed my students' hunger and excitement for reading. Many of my students do not have a variety of books at home to read on a regular basis nor the means to get them. We know that when students read a variety of books at their individual levels that they can become successful readers. This leveled library, comprehension set, and book bags will provide students with the opportunity to take home books at their level as often as they like. The bags will provide students with a way to organize and take care of their books. In addition, students can read books with comprehension tasks that will be much more meaningful than the traditional book logs and provide necessary practice of skills taught in class.

This take home book bag project will get my students excited about reading outside of school!

In the process students will be improving their reading abilities which will make them all feel more successful. My hope is that this experience will instill for my students a true love of reading.
