Supplies For Uncertain Times

Help me give my students access to sensory items to fidget with during times of stress. Also, help me gain access to technology so that virtual sessions can be more meaningful for students.

My Students

All of my students are unique and fun to work with. Some students have difficulty paying attention in class and get distracted easily, others are grieving the loss of a loved one or have survived or witnessed trauma. Some students have difficulty controlling their impulses, acting before thinking about potential consequences, and others are so terrified of making a mistake that they freeze up when taking a test. My job is to help each child learn how to navigate their own emotions and behaviors so that they can have success at school, at home, and in the larger community.

All of my students are capable of doing great things and some need additional tools and materials in order to recognize their full potential.

My Project

I am the school psychologist in my elementary school. I work with students for various reasons but have seen an increase in nervousness and anxiety in students throughout the last few years during the pandemic. Technology items will assist in providing more meaningful virtual sessions by allowing me to interact with students more effectively. The additional monitor will be used so that while I am sharing my screen with students to provide important visuals in a coping skills or social skills lesson, I am able to see my students' faces at the same time. This way I can gauge their engagement and understanding in the lesson and tailor lessons for their benefit. Wireless accessories like the keyboard, mouse, and AirPods will allow me to be able to step away to grab a resource in the moment while continuing to communicate with my students without interruption. Additionally, headphones will ensure privacy as others won't be able to hear the content of counseling sessions if they are passing by in the hallway. If students are able to be in person for learning, the technology equipment will allow for me to work with a group of students and an individual student simultaneously, as I can pre record video modeling of social and coping skills and have one student watch and practice those at the same time I am conducting counseling or a social/coping skills group, providing supervision for both in my office. Sensory items will provide an outlet for fidgeting that is non disruptive so that students may continue to learn. Coping skills activities will help students learn and generalize social emotional learning skills that will be useful throughout their life in addition to during the COVID-19 pandemic.
