My Project

The profile of the English learner (EL) students that have entered our high school has changed over the past decade. Many of our new immigrant students have interrupted education (SLIFE), and have experienced traumatic personal/ political events which has made regulating emotions and positive expression of emotions a challenge for them.Additionally, many of our students are being reunited with their family members- often mothers or fathers after lengthy periods of absence from their life as a result of the parent coming to work in the United States while the student remained in his/ her home country for a period of time. Now reunited, they are challenged to manage unresolved feelings of separation as well as coming to a new country, a new culture and are limited in knowledge as to healthy ways to express what they are feeling. It is common for our new entrant ELs to need support in negotiating how to resolve the aforementioned trauma while meeting the demands of the US school system where they are expected to learn language and content simultaneously. When you combine the factors above with learning a new language in a new country, oftentimes anxiety and stress related behaviors come to the surface. Many students simply do not know how to identify the emotions that they feel nor have skills to appropriately manage what they are feeling in a classroom environment. Sometimes this leads to the student demonstrating behavior that is not appropriate for the school setting.
