My Students

I teach family science life skills to students in 6th through 8th grades in the junior high school setting. These young adults love to work with their hands and are eager to learn how to hand sew, use a sewing machine, participate in cooking labs and discuss and role play the skills they will need someday in the workplace. Before COVID-19 changed how this project based learning took place, the students could easily accomplish their work at school. With so many students being quarantined, moving back and forth to distance learning or partial day curriculums, the quality and quantity of their projects have suffered.

These students want to participate in the community service project to make quilt toppers, want to make their own sewing projects, and have equal time in cooking units, but it just hasn't been possible with the ebb and flow of the Corona Virus.

My Project

Project materials include fabric for sewing construction with machines at school, and leatherworking bracelets and/ or keychains, and hand sewing leather or embroidery projects which could be worked on at school or at home during a quarantine.

The global pandemic has caused a rift in continuity and excellence in education.

Students have suffered with too many digital/ hypothetical or imagined project models. Teachers have worked with what they have, but it isn't enough. Students need project based learning experiences to drive their own creativity, help them to finish what they have started, and to show pride in their effort to persevere in a challenging project.
