STEM Activities for Middle School Students

Help me give my students simple machines, wind turbines, and hydraulic arms for awesome new STEM experiences.

Spanish Fork, UT Grades 6-8

My Students

My students are in 6th grade and in my class we learn, discover, and explore STEM concept with hands on project using the engineering process. My students come to me from all walks of life and have a variety of life experiences. Together, we get to design and create hands-on learning projects like drone obstacle courses, catapult basketball, and wind cars.

STEM projects are an important part of 21st century skills that our students need to have to be successful in their lives.

Learning from failure is an important skill students need to learn, and STEM activities encourage them to use failure as a learning tool.

My Project

Students need to develop an understanding of basic mechanical engineering skills. Simple machines, like pulleys and levers, are helpful for students to have hands-on experience with engineering skills. My students will have the opportunity to use the simple machines in building their own projects. The hydraulic arms will help students understand the mechanics behind the device so that they can replicate it in their own design.

Mechanical engineering is a growing field, and these supplies will help engage the students in real-world applications.

The wind turbines will help students visualize the laws of energy in action.
