Special Education Sensory Cart

Help me give my students positive and effective sensory time. Whenever student behaviors occur, my students will calm themselves down with sensory objects. All of these objects in my cart were picked to help each of my students.

My Students

I am a life skills special education teacher for grades 9-12. My school is located in a suburb right outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. I have 8 wonderful and fun students. My students love hands-on, active, and engaging lessons. They often times like to be moving around the classroom, talking with classroom helpers, and working on their I-Pads. Each one of my students has something unique about them. Some of them are great at helping around the classroom, others are great at being a good friend and understanding behaviors and emotions, and some even rock at figuring out technology.

My 8 students are full of wonderful questions, jokes, and smiles.

Truly, as a first year teacher I could not ask for a better group of students.

My Project

During the pandemic, my students have found it stressful to go back and forth from home and school. They often will get thrown off by schedules and behaviors occur. One thing, that I have found to be helpful in calming down my students behaviors is to allow them sensory time throughout the day. We do scheduled sensory time at the beginning of the day and after lunch. This scheduled time helps my students transition into school and into learning.

Often times, my students will ask for sensory time if they need a break from academics or the classroom activity.

The idea of a sensory cart came about after we visited the Children's Museum in Salt Lake City, UT on a field trip. Many of my students spent time at the sensory cart feeling the different fabrics, building with blocks, or looking at the colorful lights. I want to use this project as a way for my students to independently learn to calm their behaviors and verbally communicate when they are needing time to calm down.
