Before I tell you about how the books have already been enjoyed, I'd like to tell you about my school and my students.\r\n\r\nI teach at Jordan High School in suburban Salt Lake City. When most people from outside Utah think of our community, they think of the traditional markers of this state–religious, conservative, white. While that may be true of many members of our community, this demographic is changing. Within our boundaries live many recent immigrant families. In my classes alone, I have students who speak Spanish, Burmese, Persian, Dari and Arabic, to name a few languages. I am honored to teach these students, but once I started my independent reading unit for the first time this year, I realized that I was not serving them well enough. \r\n\r\nThis became most clear to me working with my student from Afghanistan, named Behishta. One of her first days in class, she drew a picture to represent herself.. She drew the girls of her native countru with sad faces, and behind them were piles of burning books. She explained to me an Afghani girl would do anything to go to school and read books.\r\n \r\nWhen I took my classes down to the library to find independent reading books, this same student checked out a dense text about Islam. Not even a day later, she came to me saying that she wanted to return the text because it contained inaccurate information about her religion. It was at this moment that I knew I had to better support her. \r\n\r\nThrough this generous donation, I was able to acquire a few texts for her, like \"Once Upon an Eid\" and \"Sisters of War.\" These are by and about Muslims, people from the same region of the world as Behishta. When I showed them to Behishta, she smiled and said that she would like to borrow them and read them herself. \r\n\r\nOf course, I have many students like Behishta–students whose stories aren't represented by the characters in the traditional texts. I have students who have immigrated, but they are not all the same. I have students who crossed the Darién Gap. I have students who are living in fear of deportation, and relive the terrors of their immigration journey every day. Finally, they are able to read about characters just like them in \"Solito\", \"Voces Sin Fronteras\" and \"Travesia.\"\r\n\r\nOf course, it's impossible to put the impact of high interest literature into words. Each book in this generously donated set has the potential to change a child's life, especially those children who usually don't see their stories told. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for this donation to my classroom. The difference this donation has made in my classroom will continue for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1733246318985,"projectUrl":"project/inspire-personal-reading/8898256/","projectTitle":"Inspire Personal Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Simental","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8302606_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y128&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729694836551","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8302606"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33186","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1820,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":36,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":58,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.1,"schoolId":33186,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jordan High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jordan High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/utah/canyons-school-district/jordan-high-school/33186"}
