During the pandemic, my students have found it stressful to go back and forth from home and school. They often will get thrown off by schedules and behaviors occur. One thing, that I have found to be helpful in calming down my students behaviors is to allow them sensory time throughout the day. We do scheduled sensory time at the beginning of the day and after lunch. This scheduled time helps my students transition into school and into learning. Often times, my students will ask for sensory time if they need a break from academics or the classroom activity. The idea of a sensory cart came about after we visited the Children's Museum in Salt Lake City, UT on a field trip. Many of my students spent time at the sensory cart feeling the different fabrics, building with blocks, or looking at the colorful lights. I want to use this project as a way for my students to independently learn to calm their behaviors and verbally communicate when they are needing time to calm down.
