Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My six classes of 10th & 11th-grade students come with a variety of reading levels and interests. They are motivated to graduate and take on any challenge placed before them including daily independent reading to help improve their reading stamina and skills. Not many of them identify themselves as "readers", however, and access our classroom library frequently to find an interesting book.
As Donalyn Miller states in The Book Whisperer, “Reading changes your life.
Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education." To get reading to change their lives, I want to build a classroom library that will reach more students and provide a wider assortment of choices.
After experiencing choice reading, a student said to me, " It wasn’t until this year in our class that I figured out that when I find books I like that I want to read."
In our class, we aspire to become life-long readers. I want to be able to guide my students in the right direction towards a love of reading and learning with this project.
My Project
Passionate about promoting literacy, I am working to build a large classroom library stocked with a wide assortment of diverse and high-interest books. My students come in all shapes and sizes with a variety of interests, reading levels, and backgrounds. My hope is that with a the selection available to them in our classroom library, students can find books that are "just the right fit" for them... and easily take them home during this pandemic!
The more access students have to books presents more opportunities to spark a love for reading and ultimately learning.
I want to give my students every opportunity to be successful in my classroom, and ultimately help as many of them become college-bound especially after the impact of COVID upon our learning. Through student-driven projects, thought-provoking discussions, and close reading of our classroom library books, my students will become life-long readers and prepare for college by reading in variety and volume.
