This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have come to America within the last year and are eager to unlock the promise that this country brings. However, without fluency in English, much of the learning that happens in school is frustrating and difficult for them to access. Over 500 students attend my elementary school and they are a diverse bunch! Our Spanish/English Dual Immersion program draws many students to the school, both native English and native Spanish speakers. Our student body is about 92% students of color and at least 60% of our students speak another language at home. Our free and reduced lunch rate is over 70%. The students I work with are just beginning their journey of learning English. They come from a range of countries, mostly Mexico, Vietnam and a variety of Central American countries. They are polite, respectful, and eager to learn!

My Project

Research shows that reading practice is the most effective intervention to help students improve their reading. We want to make sure our students are reading every night at home, in both English and Spanish. Currently, we are working to make sure that every student has at least five books for home reading.

Our school has an abundance of English books, which we are now able to send home with students but Spanish books are sorely lacking.

The books in this project will be used immediately with students and we look forward to seeing their progress in both languages!
