Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day, our school feeds hundreds of students with free breakfast and lunch due to the high-poverty area that we serve. On Fridays, kids are sent home with bags of nonperishable food items to eat over the weekend. During the day, we often have students who are upset, frustrated, or overwhelmed come to our sensory/calming room. Oftentimes, hunger is a large part of their struggle.
Food insecurity is a very real challenge our students face, and we want to ensure that it is not a barrier to learning!
Food is one of our most basic needs and many students rely on schools to provide their meals and snacks. Many times, when this need is met it is all it takes to help a student return to learning. Eating a simple snack while talking about their feelings or problem-solving with adults helps to regulate our kids.
Snacks such as cereal bars, granola bars, and protein bars provide kids with the ability to focus and others an oral motor, and sensory experience that our students' bodies need. We want our students to have additional access to foods that can alert or calm their bodies. Meeting students' sensory needs through food is another strategy to help students be better able to focus and learn in school.
Our classroom regularly supplies snacks to students for during their school day and to bring home. No child should experience food insecurity. We need our kid's food needs to be met so that we can build their academics and help them reach their goals. We also love to celebrate successes, since our sensory room is called the Cubs Den, we like to reward with bear-themed candy!
