This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a low-income public school in St. Louis city. The resources are limited and the days are hard, but what drives me to get up and do it again every single day is my students. They are thoughtful, intelligent, hilarious, loving, and curious.
My students need a clean environment in order to focus and be successful.
Many of them experience traumatic events in their neighborhood or at home and look to school as a safe space where they are warm, clean, and welcome. They need basic supplies to stay engaged and feel valued. Clean desks, clean floors, and a comfortable space is the base of what they need to be successful.
My Project
I am requesting cleaning supplies to help my students feel comfortable, safe, and stress-free in our classroom. Our school does not supply basic cleaning supplies or hygiene products that allow our students to function. I am requesting tissues and hand sanitizer to keep my students clean and germ-free, especially in the winter and spring when allergies and sickness is at an all-time high. In addition, we are requesting cleaning wipes, glass cleaner, and paper towels to keep our desks, tables, and supplies clean. We are fifth graders, so spills and accidents are inevitable! We need these basic supplies to make sure our classroom is a safe space for learning.
