Each student will have the opportunity to use a pulse oximeter, heart rate monitor, and tape measure as they participate in fitness testing. Instead of simply completing the activities, students are able to collect information about their own bodies and see how their heart rate, oxygen levels, and body measurements can change with exercise.\r\n\r\nMy students were excited to have the chance to use real equipment that they would typically only see in a doctor's office or professional setting. The hands-on experience has helped make fitness testing more meaningful and has encouraged students to ask questions about why their bodies respond the way they do when they exercise.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue our fitness testing and have students explore what happens to their bodies before, during, and after physical activity. We will use the information they collect to help them understand the importance of staying active, taking care of their bodies, and making healthy choices. They came just in time for our unit on shapes, and I know students understood the concepts better because they were able to manipulate the shape in their own hands. Seeing the image of the shape does not help first graders truly understand the attributes of a shape, especially 3D ones! When they are able to feel, investigate, and move around the shape, they master the concept so much better. We used the 2D shapes to count sides and vertices, learn how shapes can work together to make new shapes, and how we can use shapes to make pictures. The pattern cards came in handy for that last one, and we've incorporated it as a math center as well. It will be a great review of shapes all year as well as a way to get their brains thinking creatively.\r\nWe used the 3D shapes for A LOT! 3D shapes is an entirely new concept in first grade. They come in with familiarity of the 2D shapes, but 3D is all new. Having the physical versions was so helpful in them being able to see all the faces, edges, and vertices of each 3D shape. Our math workbooks have pictures of 3D shapes, but a picture can't show 360 degrees around, so students have to image that backside of the 3D shape without having the physical model. My larger versions that I could use to model investigating the shapes were a big help as well. Things simply went so much better with shapes this year than last year because of these manipulatives. Supplies are so much more organized this year compared to last year, which helps both the students and I. It is so nice to have a specific place for clipboards to go, and students have figured out how to easily access them when needed. It makes working around the room much more accessible as well, which is great. We love to incorporate movement into learning! The zippered bags have also worked super well with some centers materials, specifically our imaginative play toys we used at the beginning of the year and throughout the year for indoor recess. We were keeping them in ziploc bags last year, so this is such an upgrade! Students are able to handle opening, closing, and putting everything away all on their own. It is great to build their independence. \r\nStudents are also LOVING the puzzles, as always! It is so great to watch students grow in this capacity at the beginning of the year. Students come in and see the puzzles as a struggle. It can take them quite a while to put one together at the beginning of the year. It also takes some time to figure out collaborating and sharing pieces. But now they are thriving! I have some groups of students who put together a puzzle, put it away, and almost complete another in just 10 minutes. Secret Stories has been a fantastic supplemental resource in addition to our phonics and literacy curriculum. Students remember the rules of reading and writing so much better with the fun stories, images, and motions. They are constantly mentioning Mommy E, who bosses around the other vowels to say their name. This week, we learned the th digraph, and they love the image of th sticking their tongue out. It's a great way for them to remember the sound as they read and write. I can't wait to introduce them to all the secret stories. \r\nWe've also been writing our high frequency words each week, and I think this has been helpful for them to remember the heart parts. They have followed the routine so well and picked up quick on how to use the flashcard rings and heart stickers to help them learn the word. The pencil boxes have kept them so organized too. Everyone's supplies are in their box in their desk - I haven't had any students lose anything yet (knock on wood!). We're going to work on actually using the flashcards we've made to practice reading the words and to look up words we want to know how to spell in our writing next. These folders will be vital to several of our classroom systems, including school-home communication, catch-up work, and math fluency practice. We couldn't do these without you! Chair pockets also give students a bit more storage, specifically for their independent reading books. Students are constantly using these all day, so having them on their chair rather than in their desk will allow be easier access as well as hopefully keep our books safer. Desks can be a dangerous place for books, so I'm really hoping these chair pockets become a game changer for our library.
