Shakespeare Looking Out

My students need 1 performance of Romeo and Juliet.

Ms. Martin Irvington High School
Irvington, NJ Grades 9-12

I teach ninth grade English at a school where the thing we have an abundance of is dedication. We have dedicated teachers and students. They both want to succeed, but the students do not feel confident that they can. The reason why is because these children are not always exposed to the things that other schools are exposed to. My students are smart. My students are hard working and enthusiastic, but they need motivation that I cannot give alone. I want my students this year to experience theater not watch a movie, but I cannot give it to them. I want to, but I am unable to. I do not have the funds to expose them to all the amazing things that they need to see to compete in college.

For the past two years I have been blessed and privileged to teach some of the most amazing ninth graders. Also, for the past few years I have been able to show these ninth graders something that they have never seen before, which is a play performed by real actors! As usual in ninth grade English, we are reading Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet", and my favorite traveling company of actors is performing it! I was so excited by this, because plays are not meant to be read they are meant to be seen. Therefore, a traveling company doing "Romeo and Juliet" was perfect. Knowing Shakespeare is the mark of a successful student both in high school and in college. Not to mention, how many times successful adults out of school use Shakespeare. Therefore, I did not hesitate about contacting them. Sadly, my excitement was short lived. When I contacted the amazing Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey, for a performance this year, they informed me that they lost their education grant. This meant that they were no longer able to give performances at reduce costs to schools like mine. My school has copious amounts of resource in the form of dedicated staff teachers but not money.

Even though we cannot afford it ourselves, maybe with your help we can. I know that these are tough times for many people, but if we do not educate our future (our children) then we will be doomed to live in the past. Some of my students have never, and will never leave the area that they live in now. Nevertheless perhaps with some motivation, and a glimpse at what life is like outside of this area of gangs and teenage pregnancy, more of my students will get a chance to shine their light to the world. Seeing that people, other than their English teach, care about them will make them want to see what else is out there. Perhaps, it will just start with college, but who knows where it will end.

Shakespeare’s work teach us about what it means to be human, it promotes literacy, and is still just as entertaining as it was in his Globe Theater. Your help will ensure my students and all the ninth graders at my school can compete in high school, college, and most importantly the real world. Please help me show my students that the world has not and will not give up on them, so they should not give up on it. Help me show them there is a world exceeding the boundaries of our city and my classroom. Thank you in advance!
