Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our high school, a diverse Title I campus in Las Vegas, many students face economic challenges that limit access to hands-on science experiences. Yet they are naturally curious and thrive when learning becomes interactive. This project will transform our classroom into a living laboratory where students grow plants while growing their scientific understanding.

With seeds, soil, starter trays, microgreens supplies, and cleaning materials, students will explore botany through direct experience.

Instead of reading only about plant biology, they will germinate seeds, track growth, analyze environmental conditions, and connect classroom concepts to real-world applications such as agriculture, sustainability, and nutrition.

Growing plants also builds responsibility, patience, and confidence. Students will monitor progress, troubleshoot problems, and take ownership of shared materials and workspace. These skills extend beyond science, supporting teamwork, persistence, and a sense of accomplishment.

Microgreens are especially impactful because they grow quickly and connect to conversations about healthy eating and food security — issues relevant to many of our families. For some students, this may spark interest in careers in environmental science, agriculture, or sustainability.

Most importantly, hands-on success can be transformative. When students see plants thrive through their care, they gain confidence in their ability to learn, nurture, and succeed.
