My classroom is full of students who are emergent bilingual learners. All of my students are learning English. My emergent bilingual learners are either recent arrivals or brand new to the country. My students bring a wide variety of cultures, languages and experiences to the classroom in order to create a diverse learning environment.
In addition to learning English, my students are expected to expand their knowledge in order to reach the second grade Common Core curriculum state standards.
My school is a small, inclusive, public school that is part of a large urban district where over seventy-five percent received free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
My students need magnetic letters to manipulate the sounds they hear when building words and working on key phonological awareness such as digraphs, short vowels, long vowels, and other sounds to help develop their literacy skills.
Shared reading is an essential part of our day and it allows all my students to access high level and high quality texts!
Highlighter tape allows me to safely highlight key parts of texts or words and have rich discussions with my students. I can highlight word parts and we can discuss what sounds those parts make. I can highlight phrases and discuss the structure of the text and identify the pattern. All of these are crucial skills for my students, especially as emergent bilingual learners!
The whiteboard paint will allow me to transform my guided reading table into one giant whiteboard and eliminate the need of more materials!
