I teach at a middle school in a high-poverty area in West Jordan, UT, with fantastic faculty. We are dedicated to our students and have recently been designated as a National School to Watch. Over 50% of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch, and we have around 200 English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students. Our school focuses on being positive and growing in learning.
I teach English Language Development and 8th-grade reading to diverse students, many from other countries.
I also work with students in a Latino crew and during after-school sports.
As an ESL lead in my school, my goal is to help our English language learners thrive academically and socially. I love my students and am so impressed with their resilience, as many have gone through many difficult times and still come out fighting.
I have been teaching for 20 years and have found mine forever home at this middle school. I am passionate about reading, books, sports, and service. Many of our teachers volunteer their time to mentor kids after school and give them a safe place to be.
My Project
Many of my English Language Learning students are experiencing a real winter for the first time and need warm gloves for the walk to school. Some of the same students have little at home, so providing reusable water bottles to take from class to class and snacks when they get hungry or after-school tutoring will provide for their basic needs.
When students don't have to worry about basic needs like warmth and hunger, they can focus on learning and completing assignments.
In their households, staples are bought for cooked meals, but snacks for growing teens are not a necessity in the budget. Having snacks available in the classroom helps them feel loved and gives them sustenance that lasts until their evening meal.
